Exfoliate! Glycolic Acid & Salicylic Acid to Smooth, Tighten, Firm and Brighten Your Skin!

Exfoliate ~ Look Younger ~ Smooth, Tighten, Firm & Brighten Your Skin ~ Glycolic Acid ~ Salicylic Acid

Today’s video is going to be about 2 Chemical exfoliants, Alphahydroxy Acid and Beta Hydroxy Acids, more specifically Glycolic Acid and Salicylic acid.
Glycolic Acid is the most effective of the Alphahydroxy acids and Salicylic acid is the most effective of the Betahydroxy Acids.
I’m going to tell you how they’re alike, why we absolutely need one or both of them as part of our skin care regiment, and which one is best suited for you depending on your skin type.

Our skin naturally exfoliates dead cells every day, but over time—primarily as a result of age and unprotected sun exposure—this shedding process slows so it’s our job to hlep it along by incorporating ingredients that encourage cell turn over and encourage our skin to behave and function like it once did.

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, e.g. glycolic and lactic acids) and BHA (beta hydroxy/salicylic acid) act to “unglue” the bonds holding dull, dead skin on the surface. Once those bonds are broken skin naturally sheds.
AHAs and BHA have shared benefits in that they both: Smooth, tighten, firm and brighten by exfoliating the outer most layer of the skin. Here is a list of what AHA’s and BHA’s can do:
⦁ remove/shed old dead skin cells
⦁ improve the appearance of photo aged / sun damaged skin
⦁ make skin look and feel firmer
⦁ promote blood flow and circulation
⦁ improve the look of dull, uneven skin tone
⦁ smooth out rough texture
⦁ Both Prep skin for better penetration of your skin care products because when you remove the build up of dead skin cells, dirt, oil and other debris that is basically just suffocating your skin, you make it easier for products to reach the skin where those important ingredients can benefit your skin the most.

How AHAs and BHAs are Different and which one is right for you?

Basically the most important thing that you need to remember is that AHAs are water-soluble (dissolves in water) and BHA is lipid or oil-soluble, which makes BHA more effective on oily skin. Because obviously if you put something that that’s water soluable where there is oil, oil and water don’t mix, so they’re not going to work together as part of a solution. But since BHA’s are oil soluable, they can get into those pore, dissolve the oil and better penetrate the hair follicle where acne starts.

AHAs work on skin’s surface, and are water soluble. They’re generally preferred for normal to dry, sun-damaged skin, due to their ability to enhance natural moisturizing factors within skin. They’ve also been proven effective in reducing the visible signs of sun damage. AHAs are also powerful moisturizers that stimulate the skin to produce hyaluronic acid (HA). AHAs hydrate from the inside out by increasing HA deposition and helping to bind the moisture in the skin.

Your skin just glows beautiful!!

Tasia says:

I just did face peel with salicylic acid and I have noticed in certain parts of my face has gone darker after everything has peeled off, can I then use glycolic acid instead within after one month? My face is combination.

Jennifer Escarffullette says:

Hi Jenifer
I’m Jennifer also
I just started watching your videos a couple weeks ago. I’m 30 years old and ordered some Rentin A. I’ll I do everyday is wash my face and moisturize, what advice do you have for me on how to get started using this. Should I follow your morning routine video?

Lourdes Layton says:

Hi Jennifer! Can I use glycolic acid at the same time I use my Retin A?

Leslie Cruz says:

Great video

Sonja Naugle says:

Hi Jennifer will you be doing a “fall outfits” video from Ross soon? I really like how you put together outfits. I enjoyed your spring video.

Funny Girl says:

I am still unsure with my skin. do you have a suggestion for me?
I have combo skin. 46 years, female; forehead, chin and that narrow space of the nasal wings are oily. I don’t have acne or pimples there (usually not and if I get some for some reason, then they rather appear close to my chin or on parts of my face I would rather describe as normal!?), then the small rest of my face is rather normal. I say small because the space above the jaw line don’t show signs of dryness but they fell like demanding for more moisture and the cheeks or rather apple of the cheeks, the nasolabial fold and the bridge of my nose – there I really have dry skin. here I also feel sensitive rather quickly in case I didn’t apply an appropriate moisturizing/caring product and I rather would get patchy skin there (wrong concealers or foundations would show up right there). when I was younger I always tried to find skin care products for combo skin where I don’t need to have several different products for the several areas. but with anti aging skin care, I realized that it is better to have different solutions. it is ok to have products I don’t put all over my face. otherwise I wouldn’t have enough for the dryer parts and also those rather normal areas probably did get irritated because they were neglected before ???
So I am fine with using different products at the same time, but what would you say? does it make sense to use AHA and BHA at the same time? or is it better to use just one and then extra treatment for the other parts of my skin? maybe the rest of a skin care routine would cover if e.g. the BHA would be to harsh?

By the way, I also use serum for parts of my face (for anti-aging day and night) and at night I apply as final step a cream with hyaluron all over my face. I don`t know, if that is of any importants when using e.g. BHA (or rather AHA?)

Thank’s a lot (also for sharing all the other information in the other videos)!!

MI’ll be 25 next week and I feel I am so lucky that I’ve found your channel. For a few months I have started to see the importance of a good skincare regimen and now my skin feels so good again, no dry patches and tightness. Thank you for educating!

HI, Thank you for your skincare info! Where do you get your glycolic acid from? I have been seeing someone but I never seem to peel after and see no affects.

Kasey says:

Hi Jennifer. Really have learned a lot from you. Great information. I am 60, have dry skin and use Retin-A every night. Would I put Glycoic..on top of the Retin-A? Thank you!!

pleasebeinteresting says:

Wrong , Glycol Acid works best for oily skin, the Glycol molecule is many times smaller than Salic break thru and penetrate the skin.. you shouldn’t mix alcohol with giving public service announcements Jennifer

Carla del Castillo says:

Thanks so much for this video Jenifer! I was so confused as to what of the two acids would suit better for my type skin. I will now, use them both. Do you have any preference on the presentation of each one of them (i.e, gels, creams, lotions?)

En Casa Con Patty says:

Great video Jen. Thanks

THE PROS says:

I’ve tried many but once I found and tried BR P50 Lotion (without phenol) ,which is used as a toner, I saw the biggest change in my skin. It was hard to find at first but I order mine through Rescue Spa. It’s spendy but it works and you don’t need much. I use about 4-5 drops and I put it in my hand instead of wasting such a prescious product by using a cotton pad/round.

shalini sharma says:

Please reply of u r using vitamin c in the morning and retinol in the evening then where to incorporate these acid exfoliants?

Kimberly Cline says:

What if you have combo skin? I’m 43. I used to have normal to dry but the last year or 6 months I’ve been experiencing oily in my t-zone. I also live in Texas and deal with the humidity and bipolar weather lol… and I travel a lot. p..s..I’ve been watching you since 10k subscribers ☺

Cookie Pritt says:

Thanks ~great product list as well. Do you do something specific for your neck and chest? These are most troublesome areas even though I extend my face routine to these areas. BTW love your nail color❤️

Liz Gilmore says:

I love how informative you are about skin care. This is my 4th day on this skin care journey and you are my idol! Should I wait for my 3 month follow up and then add the different regiments to even my tone and prevent wrinkles? Please continue to share your fountain of youth tips!!!

Im so in love with your work, really enjoy your channel

Ontrend50 Sandy Alderson says:

I love to use a 30% glycolic acid for 2 or 3 min. before I shower once a week, and always use an alpha hydroxy face cream every day. I think it helps remove the flaky skin I get from useing Retin A 5 times a week.

Melissa55 says:

I love your top!  I love glycolic acid.  It works really well on the “spots” on my arms and legs.  This was so interesting and so helpful!!!  You are just gorgeous.  Much love Melissa

M.W.Coast says:

I’m 23 and I love watching your videos- I’m obsessed with skincare. I battled horrible cystic acne last year and i have since completely cleared up my skin due to balancing my hormones and now I’m obsessed with learning and trying different ingredients in my skincare products. I love this video.. I use a pad nightly that has 10% glycol acid and salicylic acid in it- its called the Max complexion correction pad by Peter Thomas Roth… Do you recommend that I trade off nights that I use retin-a with this product? I have retin-a prescribed but scared to use it due to peeling! thx :)

Kasi Manu says:

Can I use salicylic acid face wash and glycolic acid cream?

Miss Bemi says:

Very informative! I’ve always been confused about what to chose.

Beth Hughes says:

As always, great video! I want to try a good peel, and I’m having trouble finding an effective one. I have normal to dry skin and I do use a glycolic fash wash and toner a couple of nights a week. I don’t use it every night because I just started. 05% Retin A and I read that you should not use them together.
Is this true?
What is a good glycolic peel for a newbie, and should I not use b my Retin-A when I do a peel?
Thanks!

C Momtoboys says:

Have you tried good genes, Sunday Riley? Sephora just put out a $28 set with both good genes and a cleanser, it is amazing!!! You need just a small amount each night. I love the Paula’s choice bha but this works 100 times better.

Joy Wind says:

Thank you for explaining this so clearly. It can be confusing.

Valerie Switzer says:

Thank you thank you thank you! I’m (44 yo) oily combo and have been using AHA… I’m going to incorporate BHA now to address some minor acne I have.. especially in my T-zone area.. I follow your advice as all products I have purchased from your recommendations have done wonders for me!

AnneP makeupandmore says:

Great job in breaking down what each is and what they do. Have a great weekend!

This was really informative and factual, yet simple to understand. I think I’m going to add Salicylic Acid back to my routine for my nose and chin where I have larger pores. Thank you! 😉

Mads Lol says:

Can you use both AHA and BHA at the same time? Like can my cleanser have bha and I use a toner that is aha?
